Below, learn what tools you’ll need for the job and the steps involved in how to install a car battery.

What You Need

Before you’re ready to install a new battery, you need to have the right tools and supplies. Gather the following items:

  • Anti-corrosion spray
  • Battery cleaning solution
  • New battery
  • Pliers
  • Thick rubber gloves
  • Wire brush
  • Wrenches

How to Install a Car Battery Step by Step

Begin the process by parking your car, shutting off the engine, and engaging the parking brake. Then, pop the hood. Now you’re ready to put on your rubber gloves and get started:

  1. With a wrench, loosen the nut that holds the black cable–which is the negative cable–to the battery. There are wrenches especially designed for use on car batteries.
  2. Once the nut is loose, gently twist and pull off the cable. If you’re having trouble loosening the nut, keep trying with the wrench or apply some penetrating oil. Don’t use a screwdriver or other tool.
  3. Repeat these steps to pull off the red battery cable from the positive terminal.
  4. Loosen and take off the battery hold-down clamp. This is the bracket that prevents the battery from moving around when the car is in motion.
  5. Use both hands to carefully lift out the battery.
  6. Apply a mixture of baking soda and water or a battery cleaning solution to remove any corrosion from the battery tray and hold-down clamp.
  7. With a wire brush, rub the cleaning solution into the battery cable connectors to clean them.
  8. Take the new battery and position it in the tray before attaching it in place with the clamp.
  9. Apply anti-corrosion spray to the positive and negative terminals to protect the new battery and preserve its lifespan.
  10. Attach the red cable to the appropriate terminal, then attach the black cable.
  11. Tug lightly on the connections and on the battery itself to ensure that everything is secure.
  12. Start your car. It should start without issue if the new battery has been installed correctly.

Please note that extreme care and caution are needed when moving the battery. You want to avoid spilling the battery acid, which can cause serious chemical burns.
